トリアネーはコロンビアのフサガスガの山中で1842年にベルギーのJ.J.リンデンが発見し、1860年にH.G.ライヘンバッハによって記載された。種名は、J.M.トリアナ博士に因んでいる。そしてこの花はコロンビアの国花にもなっていることは周知のとおりである。
花色は個体による変化がある。白花、白で唇弁赤花、空色花も知られている。栽培は容易。夏は風通しのよい戸外で栽培するとよい。

The pseudobulbs are club-shaped, to 30 centimeters long, and with a single, leathery apical leaf.
The inflorescence has two to five flowers, each with a diameter to 20 centimeters.
Sepals and petals are white to dark purple.
The lip is often not widely spreading and is usually dark red-purple with an orange-yellow disc.
The arrangement of the colors of the lip is highly variable. The species is native to the upper valleys of the Andes of Colombia.
