The pseudobulbs are club-shaped, to 30 centimeters long, and with a single, leathery apical leaf. The inflorescence has two to five flowers, each with a diameter to 20 centimeters. Sepals and petals are white to dark purple. The lip is often not widely spreading and is usually dark red-purple with an orange-yellow disc. The arrangement of the colors of the lip is highly variable. The species is native to the upper valleys of the Andes of Colombia.
