蘭は中国では古く数千年前から愛好され、1233年(南宋末期)には「金章蘭譜｣(趙時庚著)という世界最初の蘭に関する文献が記されているほどです。
かつては王侯貴族や文人墨客など限られた富裕階級の趣味として知られたが、現在では勿論一般庶民の中心となる。
私は幼い頃から蘭が好きでしたが、政局の不安定、多忙な仕事でなかなか落ち着いて蘭の栽培を真面目に続けてはいけませんでした。
日本は蘭の原産国ではないけれど、良い環境と多数の業者に恵まれた世界中の奇花異蘭が日本で手に入れることができます。
毎年蘭展が各地で開催され、また、アマチュア愛好家の交流も盛んに行われています。
蘭愛好家としては日本は天国みたいな国です。
アルコールが癖になっても、やめることができる。
薬も女も食べ物も、車だって断つことはできる。
だが、蘭にとりつかれたら、おしまいだ。
逃れることはできない……絶対に。

Orchids have
become people's favorites in China thousands years ago. The earliest
written record about orchids is by Zhao Shi Geng in A.D.1233, called
Jin Zhang Orchids. In olden days, cultivation of orchids is hobby
of the noble class and the upper class. Nowadays, ordinary people
can afford it too!
My grandmother loves orchids, and that makes me love orchids since
I’m young. However, due to my job and the restriction of my living
environment, I’m not able to cultivate orchids. Twenty years ago,
when I moved to Japan from Hong Kong, cultivation of orchids has
become part of my life.
Japan is not the native land of most of the orchids. However, Japan
is still a paradise for orchids amateur. This is because Japan Orchid
Growers. Association imports orchids from all over the world and it also
organizes. Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival every year. Besides,
there are also orchid clubs in different area. They also organize orchid
festivals and conferences.
J. Konisher has once written something meaning that one can quit
alcohol and drugs, one can have no women, one can have no expensive
foods, no cars etc. However, once you started to love orchids, you
cannot stop the desire of owning more different orchids and you
are “addicted” to orchids. I am one of the good examples of people
who are “addicted” to orchids.
